Hello! We stayed in a superior room, which was on the second floor. Overall, the room was decent, but not perfect. The bathroom was clean, but there was mold in the corners. The towels and bed linen were changed, but they were not perfectly white and could have some stains. There were almost no insects in the room, just a few ants on the balcony and one mosquito in the room. You can see the view on the video. We stayed in mid-February.

Overall, everything is fine) They gave us the 1st floor, I even wanted to go party judging by the reviews) but it's close to the bar for my husband, to the pool for my son, they brought sunbeds right to the room, we went swimming and back to the room. Upon check-in, there was a plate of fruits in the room. I always carefully choose, but we are not picky. The food is not like in Turkey, but everyone finds something to eat. I'll say that the reviews were scarier) than it actually is, and there is unlimited water and towels are changed constantly, the rooms are clean enough. The waves are big, but you can swim, our child is 10 years old, everything is fine. We swim twice a day. And my son likes the pool, it's clean. If you prefer it quieter, I would recommend rooms after 125, 225, 325, etc. In the photo - today's sunset.

avatar

Thank you for the information! We have booked a deluxe room, I understand it's above the second floor. Where do you swim? I understood that it's not possible near the hotel!

avatar

Perhaps waves may seem scary at first glance, but once you wade in up to your waist and jump on the waves, you'll also feel the excitement.

Either 200 meters to the right of the hotel, relatively calm sea, or 100 meters to the left of the hotel for wave lovers.

We stayed at the hotel in mid-February. Deluxe room. Room: Room on the 4th floor. The ocean view is excellent. The room is spacious, bright but tired, the bathroom doors have mold, the plaster in the bathroom is already cracked, the bed is squeaky. The balcony door is flimsy. There was a safe, kettle, refrigerator. The sockets are of English format, but one near the bed did not work. Liked the bedside lighting control, which is convenient. We brought our own adapters. There was an army of ants in the room and bathroom, marching somewhere throughout the vacation, we didn't bother them, they didn't bother us either. Also, a lizard came twice. Cuisine: We only had breakfast. The fruit was normal, there are local dishes, two types of curry and other spicy dishes. From European cuisine, one side dish, jam egg, and beans. They make omelets. Three types of juices, tea and coffee. We were not hungry, but maybe there wasn't enough variety. We were at the restaurant, had grilled seafood. One portion is enough for two, they were well-prepared, but the fish was slightly undercooked. The cocktails were tasty, the hookah was average. Service and staff: Most of the staff speak English, one or two people know 10 words in Russian. The staff, not intrusive (for Asia), only called us to the seafood restaurant twice. They try to help when possible, for example, to help reserve a sunbed or find a forgotten hat from yesterday. But they can also act dumb, for them it is a sacred duty. For example, we wanted to take a lunchbox, asked at the reception if such a service is available. They said yes, come when you need it. We came at 9:10 pm, it turned out that we should have come before 9:00 pm, and they were very sorry. When we first inquired, they did not tell us about it. We also paid for diving, but the payment was made to another room, and the wrong program was booked. When we tried to figure it out, a guy at the reception said it wasn't his problem. Room cleaning was normal, they cleaned everything, nothing was stolen. Towels might have stains, not sure how they change them, bed linen is also not the whitest. In addition, we left tips every day, they put extra water bottles a couple of times. They find change immediately. They can help with where/when in Hikkaduwa. But at the beach, local tour agents are always around, it's hard to get rid of them. We saw them spraying insects on the hotel grounds, we only saw three mosquitoes during the whole time. The wildlife is scarce, only crows, and only once a chipmunk came.🐿️ The internet catches everywhere, not the fastest but you'll be connected. The pool is large, warm, but some tiles have come off in places, be careful, we accidentally cut our legs. There are enough sunbeds, but by 10 a.m. there will be no free ones. The restaurant area is great, right by the ocean, you can sit in the evenings and enjoy the view. Good surf school, enjoyed diving, excellent Russian-speaking instructors. Location: There is a large store in front of the hotel, many shops and cafes/restaurants. On the ocean side, there is a coral reef, you can't swim there, only help your feet or stand knee-deep in the "holes" in the coral. But you can see many fish and sea urchins in the reef. On the left, there is Narigama Beach, about 200 meters away, you can rent a sun lounger at the cafe, but the waves are always strong there. It's alright for surfing, or if you enjoy jumping in the waves and resisting the back current. On the right, about 400 meters away, there is Turtle Beach, near Hikka Trance. The part is somewhat narrow, making the beaches of Anapa seem even wider. Further is a dirty bay with boat parking, and beyond that is a calmer place, but there is often sewage flowing from the city. The next beach is a kilometer away from Citrus, there are no waves, buoys, but many locals and tourists. The location is good for those who like to move around and explore or do not plan to spend all vacation in the ocean. Tuk-tuk, taxis, or bike rentals are always available outside the hotel. Conclusion: A decent hotel for Hikkaduwa and Sri Lanka, a solid 3*, but not 4*. You can feel safe here. But for that price, you can find something fresher. The hotel can be described as: "I don't regret choosing it and spending a vacation there, but we won't go there next time."

avatar

A classy hotel. The second week is underway. So far nothing to complain about. Everything is top-notch. Polite staff. Clean. Delicious. Everything you need. It's a solid 4*. Considering the entertainment, it could even pass for a soft 5*.

avatar

We have lizards, ants, and occasionally dirty towels are given. Moreover, it does not depend on the tip)

avatar

Here I read such reviews on the internet and was prepared for this, they give me normal towels, all white and white sheets, though a little stingy and give shampoo instead of shower gel, but I seem to have an allergy to their gel anyway.

First day. The flight was normal. The room was clean. They gave us an economy room for the night. They promised to relocate us. There's no safe in the room for some reason. But the Wi-Fi reception is excellent. Everything is clean. The sheets are white. We had an excellent meal at the restaurant. 8 plates of curry. Cocktail and cola. The total amount was 4000. I think it's not bad for a hotel. Overall, it's safe to say that you can go. If someone wrote that there is no beach at Citrus and it is impossible to enter the sea, believe these good people 😆. There is a beach with sand. But you can't bring a lounge chair to it. Same with towels. It's really impossible to enter the sea. When I was reading about the reef here, I imagined pictures from SpongeBob with small corals. In the end, everything looks just like in the photos). But it doesn't affect my liking for the hotel at all. The staff is super polite. They try to help. Every evening there's entertainment, and in the daytime there's aqua aerobics in the pool. The sandy beach is within walking distance along the coast. So I keep going back and forth there for now. There was an option to book a room right on the beach. I thought a quadruple room would be better. I regret nothing (except for the beach 😅) If you have booked the hotel, don't worry. The sandy beach is literally 2-4 buildings away from us. We can see it from our balcony. It's only a couple of minutes walk, at most.

avatar

Can you please tell me, does Citrus offer massages? If so, what is the price and is it good? 🙏

avatar

There is a spa. I haven't been. Respond if you've been.

What is missing opposite the beach, even plus the enormity of this hotel, is the most beautiful view of the ocean, not someone's, excuse me, bottoms, like Hikka Transa's. Everyone stands upside down, turtles are observing and feeding...

For me, this hotel is the perfect middle ground: it's not as expensive as in Hikkaduwa, and not as sketchy as the cheaper ones in the neighboring Hikkaduwa. We came to Hikkaduwa because of the surf. The surf beach with waves is about 400-700 meters to the left. To the right, about 400 meters away, is Hikkaduwa Beach with turtles and a crowd of tourists. Further to the right is a beach with a coral reef. Yes, there is no beach in Citrus. But there are also no people on the sandy shoreline and no vendors))) The rooms are clean, with crisp white linens. Cleaning and linen change are done daily. They even wash the cups and glasses in the room))) The hotel grounds are small, but cozy, and there is enough space for everyone. It's better to ask for a higher floor to have a view of the ocean without trees obstructing it. There are still mosquitoes))) But they are silent))) We woke up today with mosquito bites. So a mosquito repellent won't hurt. But we sleep with the window open to hear the sound of the ocean. I don't know if the mosquito repellent would help))) As for the "all-inclusive" alcohol, I can't say either))) Yesterday I ordered a cocktail for dinner. It cost around 1000 rupees. There are no beach towels((( Well, no beach, no towels))) There are plenty of towels at the pool. And... of course, the same towels can be found at the neighboring beaches! 🤣🤣🤣😜 If you enjoy snorkeling, I highly recommend bringing snorkeling gear. The reef and rocks are sometimes close to the water surface and you can kick them with your feet. I can't comment on the spa: we didn't go. I would have brought SPF 80 sunscreen))) SPF 50 is not enough. And after tanning, it's a must! A long-sleeved swim shirt. A mask with a snorkel is a must. Perhaps, it's not relevant to everyone, but I forgot to bring laundry detergent))) As usual, laundry in hotels is expensive... Another recommendation: bring a power adapter (they didn't give us one at the hotel, they ran out). It costs 500-900 rupees here.

avatar

Hello, are there any insects in the room, such as ants?

avatar

In our apartment, no, I haven't seen it. Mosquitoes, it seems, hide in the closet))) but they don't bite. A couple of times, either a lizard or something similar ran onto the balcony, but it didn't want to come into the room)))

Good evening! Please tell me, how far is the beach for regular swimming, where it is possible to actually swim?

avatar

12 minutes at a very leisurely pace. Along the edge of the ocean, contemplating sea urchins and moray eels (today there is a strong low tide and the reef is exposed).

Can you buy a mask there? Because ours is already old.

avatar

Sure! And there is a rental place nearby. In general, you can buy everything for relaxation here! Even seaweed for feeding turtles)))) Although you can collect seaweed yourself nearby. There are masks for rent at the reef. I didn't understand the price, it's either 500 or 5000. But I wouldn't recommend taking them: they are very dirty (((

We only had breakfast at the hotel, it was clean, with daily cleaning, and the staff was excellent. There are plenty of cafes nearby.

avatar

Thank you. Can you give me an approximate idea of prices in cafes and shops?

avatar

Dinner for two costs $15 on average. Huge servings + juice and beer. There may be cheaper options somewhere, but we haven't looked. 😊

For shrimp, if you want them fresh and tasty, go to the market, it's about a 5-minute drive, you can even walk there. They will cook them right in front of you. 1000 times better than in a cafe and cheaper too)

5000 rupees with drinks for two... this is if there is only curry and noodles, everything has become expensive this year.

avatar

Tom Yam with garlic since 1890. Everyone will have enough to eat. Lots of crabs. And also to drink. Around 5000. Oh well. Either my son ordered curry, and I had shrimp. But if you look closely, yes. It has definitely become expensive. And everything in the store is very expensive. And their gasoline is extremely expensive.

There is a choice of meat, even for those on a meal plan. I didn't go to breakfasts myself, I would sleep and then go to cafes for breakfast. There are many cafes around. There is a great cafe called Garlic near the hotel, and there is also a decent cafe right next to the store. My experience with excursions didn't go well, I can't say much. I liked the hotel, it was understandable that it was a bit tired and not very clean, but in terms of comfort level, I give it a high rating. The staff worked at the highest level: everything was resolved quickly. I would come back again.

avatar

A pretty decent hotel. The service is quite fast and the staff is friendly. The rooms are worn out, and the air conditioning works strangely - either too cold or stuffy, and it blows directly onto the bed, which is uncomfortable for us. However, the rooms vary greatly. We are on the 4th floor, which is the top floor of the building. The ceiling in the bathroom is leaking, and the air conditioning has broken down a couple of times. They offered to change our room, but we declined. They fixed the air conditioning, but unfortunately, the ceiling is still leaking.

We only had breakfasts, not exactly a wide choice, but no one will stay hungry. Here's a video showing what they serve for breakfast.

avatar

I believe that there is enough food for breakfast.

We stayed at this hotel 10 days ago. It's not a 5-star hotel, of course, but for the money we paid, everything was fine. Yes, if you come towards the end of breakfast, lunch, etc., there's not much food left. I didn't see any disrespectful attitude from the staff. They all did their job quickly and with a smile. Plus, I was alone with my daughter. The beach is only a 10-minute walk away and it's nice. Our room was on the 4th floor with an ocean view, it was a standard room. The rooms looked a bit worn out, but that's Asia - the high humidity takes its toll. There were no cockroaches or other animals in the room. The neighbors' doors also didn't bother us. And the sound of the ocean at night is wonderful 😉👍

avatar

I will leave a brief review of the food at the hotel. The food is very spicy, even though we asked for it not to be seasoned with pepper. The local chef apparently seasons everything with pepper at their discretion, and everything ends up being too spicy. Despite there being enough food, it is all too spicy, so the children will go hungry.

We are currently staying here. I do not recommend this hotel. There are major issues with alcohol. Beer/rum is served with scandal if it is all-inclusive, but without any problems if you pay for it separately. As for the food, if you are slightly late, there will be practically nothing left for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The service towards Russians is very disrespectful. The rooms are very worn out, but that's not the worst part - the most interesting part starts at seven in the morning when neighbors in the adjacent rooms start getting ready for breakfast and the doors slam so loudly that you jump out of bed, and it continues until nine in the morning local time. Have a pleasant stay)))) There is a grass beach, but swimming is not possible - there are reefs right away. If you go to the left, it's about 800 meters and you can swim in the ocean there. You are not allowed to take towels outside the beach area, there is security. Oh, I forgot - there are cockroaches too))) The pool has sharp edges on the tiles, so be careful, my child cut his toe.

avatar

Can you tell me if there are any pharmacies near the hotel?

avatar

The pharmacy is located on the opposite side, about 5 minutes left from the hotel.

Yesterday morning we arrived at Hikkaduwa and are staying at the "Citrus" hotel. The hotel is amazing, clean, beautiful grounds with lots of greenery, monitor lizards, chipmunks, crows, and the ocean in front of the hotel with waves and a coral bottom. Slightly to the right, there is a calm bay with small waves, excellent for swimming. Just 200 meters away is the turtle beach. Yesterday evening the water was a bit murky, but today it is clear and transparent. The hotel has a great restaurant where we have breakfast and dinner, and everything is very tasty. Breakfast includes everything, including fresh juices, and it is included in the price. For dinner, there are many spicy dishes that are incredibly delicious. For those who don't like spicy food, there are many options without spices. Prices in restaurants and cafes, in general, are lower than in Moscow. For example, three seafood soups, shrimp and avocado salad, a large plate of grilled king prawns with garlic (enough for two), and three fresh juices cost around 8000 rupees, which is approximately 2600 rubles. So, draw your own conclusions. There is a supermarket opposite the hotel with fixed prices, where you can find everything you need. Excursions are available everywhere, so negotiate and you can get them at half the price compared to the hotel guides. Wishing everyone a great vacation and good weather.

Hello everyone! Right now, my husband and I are relaxing here. As for the weather, it's warm and the ocean is a bit wavy. However, to the right of the hotel, there are a couple of options to explore (such as going beyond the reefs or visiting the bay with turtles near Hikkaduwa Transit). The occasional rain showers don't bother us much. The weather is fantastic, we don't know who says it's "off-season". If there are any clouds, they quickly bring short rains, and then it's like a fairy tale again 🙌 The food is good, we are on a half-board basis, and for lunch, we visit cafes. Red Lobster is excellent and not far away. As for excursions, to the left of the hotel, about 5-10 minutes down the road, there is Suriya Tours. The prices there are great compared to other offers, and a pleasant Russian-speaking girl at the entrance can help with anything. It's been the sixth day, and we have explored a lot. There is a wonderful tuk-tuk driver at the hotel entrance named Pini (emphasis on the first "i")), and he took us around the southern coast for 5-6 hours for 4000 rupees 👌😊

We are here now. At first, we were assigned a room without a balcony and with a window facing the road, citing full occupancy and lack of rooms. They offered free dinners as compensation and promised to move us to a different room the next day. We didn't want to cause a scene and ruin the mood, so we agreed. Then, as promised, we were moved to a room with an ocean view the next day. The weather is good, sunny in the morning, and after lunch it gets cloudy, but still very warm and the water is hot. With each passing day, there are more clouds, thunderstorms, and less sunshine. Tonight, it's going to rain, so our evening walk got canceled. But it doesn't spoil our vacation because when the sun is out, it's scorching hot and many people get sunburned. We only bought breakfasts, which was the right decision, as two dinners at the hotel were enough for us. The breakfasts are okay, served from 7:30 to 10. There is no private beach, but it's for the best. The view is without tourists and all that. The ocean is great, lots of wildlife like crabs, turtles, fish, and much more. The hotel doesn't provide beach towels, they only give them out for the pool. It's not allowed to bring them to the beach. The beach is much cleaner compared to Asia usually. Everything is good, the location is very convenient. Don't worry. There are plenty of cafes with food for every taste and budget. In the evening, there is live music at the hotel, and in many cafes, they also sing in Russian.

avatar

Recently returned from this hotel. The territory is small, but well-maintained and cozy. Pleasant smell and sound of the ocean. The waves were strong, but many people swam on the left at the surf beach. If you go out of the hotel to the left, there is a long beach. Many people buy seashells for their feet. You can leisurely walk along the ocean for an hour. It is very beautiful to walk there at 6-7 am, when many people are still asleep, and to witness the sunsets. To the right of the hotel, there is a bay beach, but the water there is muddy because diving boats come and anchor there. I didn't enjoy swimming there but visited during diving trips. The hotel has a Russian-speaking diving instructor who will introduce you to the world of diving in an interesting and professional way. The rooms in the hotel are old and need renovation, the cleaning is average but not perfect. Dust and sand remain. There is no feeling of cleanliness in the room. The best ocean views are on the 3rd and 4th floors. The hotel is calm and family-friendly. There are no activities for children and no entertainment besides live music in the evenings. So if you plan to bring children, you will have to entertain them yourselves. If you are looking for relaxation, this hotel will be a good fit for you. 90% of the guests are Russian, the rest are Germans and French. The staff is friendly, they try to speak Russian words, but the communication there is in English. Opposite the hotel, there is a supermarket and a liquor store. The assortment and prices are good. It is not possible to swim in front of the hotel as there are corals. For me, this was a big plus! You can peacefully sunbathe on a sun lounger and enjoy the ocean. There is no screaming crowd, only occasional passers-by from other hotels. I have very positive impressions and would like to return to this small hotel again. P.S. the President of Sri Lanka chooses this hotel for business meetings, so they strive to maintain safety and service quality. He visited on February 23rd, and there was a lot of security, but everything was calm, and the guests were treated very delicately and they tried not to scare them.

avatar

Could you please tell me if all the rooms have a sea view or if some of them face the road? I have a superior room and I can't find any information about whether it has a sea view or not.

avatar

ALL rooms face the ocean. On each floor, there are long shared balconies (corridors) with entrances to the rooms from the road side. So, if you stay on the 3rd and 4th floors, you take the elevator and walk along the external open corridor (balcony) to your room. From this corridor, you can see the road and the supermarket across it. The view from the rooms on the 1st and 2nd floors will not be panoramic of the ocean, pool, or trees on the premises. The soundproofing in the room is poor, and you can hear the road and the people enjoying themselves on the premises, but I had earplugs and solved the problem when the noise was too bothersome. The air conditioner in the room runs on a card (it cannot be controlled separately from the lights) and it gets very cold. Sometimes I had to turn it off in the evening to warm up (the lights go off too) or put on a sweater. Keep this in mind if you have children or get cold easily.

avatar

Can you please tell me if the hotel is 5-star and how is the food and the condition of the rooms?

avatar

It is not up to 5 stars. But it is not in this category in the rating. It is rated as a solid 3 stars. The food is monotonous and adapted to European cuisine. There is a lot of such information on the internet and in reviews, as well as on the hotel's website.

avatar

Hello! Could you please advise me on which meal plan is better to choose at this hotel - breakfast only or breakfast/dinner?

avatar

I only had breakfasts so that I wouldn't be tied to the hotel during the day. On the hotel grounds, there is an open area with tables and a bar counter, offering a magnificent view of the ocean. Breakfast starts from 7:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. The earlier you come, the fewer people there are, and the more you can hear the sound of the ocean ))) Next to the hotel, to the left along the coast, there is a developed infrastructure and a lot of cafes offering European cuisine and a wonderful ocean view. There is a choice to have lunch at a new place every day. I preferred to visit cafes and restaurants at other hotels. They ensure quality and hygiene there 😊

I stayed at this hotel. Overall impressions: it's dirty around the area and people constantly approach you to buy something. The lagoon, where you can swim, is practically without a beach. There are only boats and a dirty river flowing into the ocean at this location. So, if you're planning on staying within the hotel premises and swimming in the pool, it's okay.

avatar

There is no river there, and the boats in the lagoon are not owned by Citrus, but by HikkaTrans. We stayed at the hotel next to Citrus, walking along the beach to the surfers' beach. The hotel had a clean and well-maintained area, and we witnessed a couple of local weddings there. During the excursions, we got to know two couples from that hotel, and everyone was satisfied.

You can't swim, just dip your legs in. Coral right away. If it's for children, there are small windows in the coral, about half a meter deep. Beaches nearby, about 200 meters in each direction. But the waves are strong.

Hello! We had breakfasts and dinners. We haven't reached breakfast yet :) we went to dinner once. There were several types of meat, rice, and pasta. We didn't try the pasta at the buffet. The rice was tasty, but the meat was not very good. We have come to the conclusion that you can eat there, but it's not very tasty :) We are going to cafes.

We only had breakfast. For dinner, we usually go to cafes. The portions are usually large. We order two dishes and some drinks. On average, it costs 10-20 dollars for two people. But the hotel has a possible advantage, it is more like Europe rather than Asia.

There is a beach, if you go right past the turtles, then past the cafes and boats, there is Hikkaduwa Beach with a reef, no waves. But I don't remember any beach chairs there, we didn't use them.

Hello. Could you please tell me what are the differences between the deluxe and superior rooms in this hotel?

Comment
avatar
Olga
2023-10-27T03:46:21+03:00

The deluxe rooms are larger and all have balconies with ocean views on the upper two floors. The superior rooms are smaller and mostly face the ocean as well, with balconies or terrace-like balconies. On the first floor, there are rooms with access to the lawn, as well as rooms without balconies that face the road, but they are probably used as temporary accommodations when the others are occupied. We stayed in one of those for the first two days, and they offer compensation for it - free dinners. The first few days were spent on the road, and we only used the room for sleeping, which was fine. Then, we were given a great room on the second floor, right in the center, with a view of the pool and the ocean between the trees - it was very beautiful and convenient. If there are two of you, the superior room is fine, but with a child, the deluxe room would be more comfortable.

The first and second floors are likely not visible from the ocean. They are very low. However, all other rooms face the ocean. The ocean is visible from the upper floors. We are currently staying here. We are on the fourth floor in a standard room. Due to a tree, the ocean is only visible on the sides.

The hotel has security that operates 24/7. I felt safe to the best of my ability. Of course, it is always recommended to keep an eye on your belongings yourself. There are many Russians who visit Hikkaduwa, so you won't feel like you're in a completely different country, unless it's on weekends/holidays when locals come to the ocean.

Does the hotel have a beach? Where can one swim comfortably?

Ekaterina
2023-06-08T21:45:40+03:00

Good evening. Honestly, we didn't go separately with the phone to the bathing areas as we leave our bags with belongings on the hotel premises, it's safer that way :/ All the beaches are public, so if you go out, you might not find your phone or wallet 🤨 But I can describe where to swim: you go to the beach, turn left about 50 meters, across from the unfinished building (there are beams sticking up, hard to miss), the waves are strong, but there's a sandy entrance, just be careful not to get carried away sideways as there are strong rip currents on the sides. Alternatively, turn right about 50 meters, there's a sandy entrance, in the middle of the reefs there's a small "lagoon" with a sandy entrance where kids swim in the first half of the day, it's shallow and the waves break against the reefs, so it's quite calm there. In the evening, it's restless everywhere. The third option is the turtle beach near Hikkaduwa Trance, it's calm but not too deep and there might be turtles that could come close. Plus, there are baby reef sharks swimming around.
