I am a big fan of English literature. Right now, I am studying the works of Charles Dickens and his biography, and I discovered that he was born in the city of Portsmouth. I thought, why not visit this city and wander through the streets and places where this famous writer once walked? Moreover, I learned that Arthur Conan Doyle also lived in this same city, and I love his works as well. I immediately suggested to my Watson, that is, my husband, to embark on this adventure in a small British town.

We are not fans of lunches and dinners in hotels; we prefer cafés and small restaurants for that, but we really love breakfasts in them. It’s a great time-saver in the morning. My husband and I love to eat well, so I found places where guests especially praised the breakfast. I arranged the options from the highest rating to the average so that one could choose for any budget and taste. The image galleries and prices get refreshed with the latest updates regularly. They were last updated on January 24, 2025.

Hotel features

I really liked this cozy hotel in the Cosham area of Portsmouth. Classic English style on the outside and modern inside. It is suitable for travelers by car, as parking here is free. A Catholic church is nearby, so you can attend an organ music concert. Also, Gurnard Road park is a lovely place for walks. This option is suitable for both business trips and leisure.

Breakfast

At The Red Lion by Innkeeper's Collection, according to guests, the breakfast is the most delicious. The hotel has a classic pub atmosphere where your journey begins with tasty dishes. Breakfast is served here until 12:00 PM. The restaurant prepares the best traditional Irish breakfast in Portsmouth with pork sausage, eggs, vegetables, and bread, or a vegetarian option with vegan sausages and eggs, vegetables or avocado toast. Or you can choose something lighter, such as French toast with bacon, porridge, casserole, salad, or potato pancakes with coffee. According to guest reviews, the breakfast is distinguished by a variety of dishes and high quality. They note that the portions are large and fresh ingredients are used for preparation.

Hotel impressions

I looked through the reviews of the rooms, and mostly guests note the cleanliness and comfort, the presence of good amenities such as soft beds, powerful showers, hairdryers, and flat-screen TVs. Among the drawbacks, some mention stagnant air in the rooms due to poor ventilation. They write that it can be hot and stuffy, despite the presence of fans. Also, some windows do not open fully. Noise from street traffic and sounds from neighboring rooms due to thin walls can also be distracting.

Hotel surroundings

After a hearty breakfast, you can set off with a clear mind to explore Portchester Castle and the Farlington Marshes Nature Reserve. For lunch or dinner, stop by the Star & Garter, Coach & Horses, Golden Hind, or Pat and Ian's Fish Bar. If you drive a little further, you can see the attractions of the seaside town, including the historic Portsmouth dockyard, the Spinnaker Tower, and the Clarence Pier amusement park.

Hotel Features

I noticed this place because of its history, it reminded me of a palace. The Queens — is an Edwardian building listed as a Grade II historical monument. What is now a four-star hotel was originally called Southsea House and was built by architect Augustus Livesay in 1861. Over the years, well-known guests have stayed here. Among them was Winston Churchill, actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson, who filmed two episodes of the "Mr. Bean" series in Portsmouth in 1992, including one in the hotel itself — "Mr. Bean in Room 426." Just recently — actress Joan Collins, who filmed scenes for her movie "The Time of Their Lives" in the Elizabeth ballroom. This feature impressed me the most and prompted me to add this option to my list.

Breakfast

This hotel is on par with the first one, and it also serves amazing breakfasts, according to guests who have stayed here. You will spend your morning time in the restaurant 1865. You will be amazed by the 4.5-meter high ceilings, exquisite stucco, and luxurious chandeliers. You will witness the grandeur of Edwardian elegance and be transported to the past. During breakfast, you will enjoy stunning views from the large windows facing the south. Breakfast is served from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM on weekdays and from 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM on weekends. From the menu, you can choose a full English breakfast, which includes: bacon, black pudding, sausages, beans, fried eggs, mushrooms, and toast. There is also a vegetarian breakfast with grilled halloumi, avocado, vegetable sausage, fried eggs, and potatoes. Muffins, eggs Benedict, smoked salmon toast, porridge, and pancakes are also available for order. And unlimited juices, tea, and coffee.

Hotel impressions

Guests praise the staff at the front desk. Everyone likes the rooms, which are comfortable and well-equipped. There is a safe, mini-fridge, iron and ironing board, desk and chair, television, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee making facilities, telephone, premium shower cosmetics, hairdryer, and private bathroom. However, it can be a bit noisy due to the creaky floorboards in the rooms above. Some have noted that the shower door did not close properly, and the storage space in the bathroom was small. But many are delighted with the beautiful view of the harbor from the windows.

Seasonal offer

If you are planning to go to Portsmouth for Christmas and New Year, be sure to stay at The Queens Hotel, as it offers wonderful festive services and events. From the Christmas menu to fun parties and exclusive offers for couples and the whole family. Please note that all these offerings are paid. But it is a great opportunity to diversify your holiday routine, create new traditions, and just have a good time.

Hotel features

I noticed that there are many buildings in Portsmouth that are architectural monuments, and the boutique hotel Becketts is no exception. This very cozy townhouse has only 6 rooms, meaning there will be few people in the hotel. It is also ideally located in the heart of Southsea. I wrote about this a little further down. It is important to note upon check-in that the hotel does not allow the installation of double glazing, air conditioning, or elevators. As a result, the bedrooms are not accessible for guests with limited physical mobility. This feature may also narrow your choice of hotels if the aforementioned is important to you.

Breakfast

Breakfast will be served in the cozy inner courtyard of the townhouse dining room, and if the weather does not permit, you'll move to the equally charming hall with a fireplace. Meals are served at the following times: Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 10:30 AM, on Saturday and Sunday from 8 to 11. The menu will feature a continental breakfast in a buffet format with hot dishes, Lavazza coffee, and quality tea. Guests say that the food selection at breakfast is good, but they would like a greater variety of hot dishes.

Impressions of the hotel

Guests praised the clean and comfortable rooms with cozy beds. The rooms are located on the first and second floors of a 200-year-old townhouse. The spaces are small but beautifully decorated, featuring a large flat-screen TV, tea and coffee making facilities, comfortable Simba mattresses, bathrooms with showers, a reliable safe, and free Wi-Fi. Guests appreciated the friendly and warm attitude of the hotel owners, which always adds joy and a sense of care.

Hotel surroundings

Becketts is located just a short distance from the 600-meter-long promenade and a 10-minute walk from Gunwharf Quays, the historic naval dockyard, and the center of Southsea. Portsmouth has excellent transport links, whether by mainline trains or intercity buses from the nearby transport hub, or ferries to the Isle of Wight, France, and Spain. Here you can also take a hovercraft ride to Ryde – a unique city attraction and a great way to spend the day.

Hotel Features

The hotel is quite simple, without any frills. For those travelers who are not looking for anything special, aside from quality service, tasty breakfasts, and comfortable beds. That is why I added it to my list, to provide options for different preferences.

Breakfast

In the morning, breakfast in English/Irish style is served in a cozy dining room with large windows. It will include: a fried egg or omelet, crispy bacon, several sausages with a side of beans, tomatoes, and other vegetables, rings of white and black pudding, potato bread or pancakes. I scanned the reviews to ensure that guests really enjoy breakfast at Esk Vale Guest House. They note that it is tasty and hearty, highlighting the wide variety of dishes.

Hotel impressions

Guests note the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the staff, clean and cozy rooms with good showers and comfortable beds. The rooms are equipped with a TV, a small desk with a chair, and a wardrobe, as well as a tea and coffee set. The bathroom is fitted with a shower cabin. For those traveling by car, there is parking on the premises, which many have found convenient. Guests also appreciated the excellent location: close to the beach and just a few minutes' drive to the port with ferries.

Hotel surroundings

The hotel is located close to the D-Day Museum. Visit it if you are interested in military history. It tells the story of the largest amphibious operation in history, Overlord, during the Normandy landings to liberate Paris. Be sure to also visit Southsea Common park and Eastney Beach, which are just 2 km away. These places are perfect for outdoor walks and memorable photos.

Hotel Features

I liked this hotel at The Hard for its location. When else but on a trip should you stay in unusual places? Especially near the dock with a view of the Solent coast – the bay on the south of England. It is believed that the name is related to the clay that settles on the shoreline during low tide. It was rolled and dried until it became hard to create the slip. It is very interesting to study the places you think about staying at before the trip; it makes the vacation more mindful.

Breakfast

Breakfast is served for guests from 7:30 to 10:30 AM at the partner hotel Keppel’s Head. During public holidays, the timing may change, so it should be confirmed before check-in. The menu includes a choice of coffee: espresso, americano, cappuccino or latte, tea, hot chocolate, as well as a full English breakfast consisting of 2 slices of bacon, 2 sausages, 2 eggs, mushrooms, beans, tomatoes, mashed potatoes, and toast. Guests note the large and delicious portions, and are very satisfied with the offered menu and the preparation of the dishes. Since The Lady Hamilton is a pub hotel, in the evening you can enjoy a tasty and hearty dinner there with drinks from the bar, but at an additional cost.

Hotel Rooms

I liked the standard double room with one bed and included breakfast. The window offers a beautiful view of the bay and ships. You will have your own bathroom with a shower, a double bed, a desk, and a wardrobe, everything for tea and coffee.

Hotel impressions

From the reviews, I noted that the hotel has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Many mentioned the staff, who go above and beyond to make the stay unforgettable. However, some mentioned issues with room cleanliness, such as dust and not very clean showers. There were also people who had a malfunctioning water heater in the sink. Additionally, it should be noted that there is no parking nearby, except for paid spots at a distance. So keep this in mind if you're traveling by car.

Hotel surroundings

The hotel has a convenient location in the city center. It is close to public transport and major attractions. These include the HMS Warrior – the world's first all-metal battleship for open sea travel, launched on December 29, 1860. Also nearby are the National Museum of the Royal Navy and the warship HMS Victory, which are less than 500 meters from The Lady Hamilton.

Hotel Features

In addition to the rooms where you will feel like you're in a movie about Anne Boleyn, but with modern conveniences, you will be staying in a 16th-century building rich in history, filled with intrigues and interesting facts. Be sure to read the amazing story of the hotel! Who knows, you might see the ghost of George Villiers, the Duke of Buckingham, and not even know what he is doing here?

Breakfast

Continental breakfast with dishes in English and Italian styles is offered daily from 07:00 to 10:00 AM in the hall of the beautiful dining room. The menu includes fresh vegetables and fruits, pastries, meats, ham and cheeses, smoked salmon, as well as freshly brewed tea and coffee. According to guests, the breakfast is fresh and appealing, served in exquisite porcelain, with a wide selection of products.

Hotel Rooms

I really liked The Red Room on the first floor with a view of High Street. It's decorated with hand-painted William and Mary style wall panels. There is a carved oak king-size bed with luxurious bedding and Egyptian cotton towels, and a seating area with a sofa and a writing desk. The bathroom features a large jacuzzi tub with a shower, a bidet, as well as complimentary Sea Kelp toiletries from Scottish Fine Soap Company and bathrobes with slippers. The room includes a tea and coffee station with fresh milk, a minibar stocked with wine, spirits, beer, and mineral water. There will also be a flat-screen TV with Freeview channels, as well as a DVD player for a cozy night in. The hotel also offers other styled rooms. For example, The China Room in Victorian and Chinese styles with a view of the boulevard, garden view rooms in Victorian and country styles, as well as an oak room in Tudor style. Guests in reviews note the attentive service, cleanliness, impeccable rooms, convenient location, and the unique character of the hotel.

Hotel surroundings

If you have a car, visit the Elizabethan estate and see the wonderful collection of paintings and furniture, including 14 paintings looted from Philip IV of Spain, as well as the rural life museum. You can go to the "Blue Reef" aquarium, a 25-minute walk away, and participate in a real underwater safari. And, of course, I won't miss the Charles Dickens museum. It features a fully furnished living room, dining room, and bedroom with authentic Regency-era furniture and household items that will immerse you in the world of a 19th-century family. View exhibits belonging to Dickens himself, including personal items such as his snuffbox and even the very sofa on which he died. These words send chills down your spine.

Hotel features

Somerset House Boutique Hotel and Restaurant is a very beautiful small boutique hotel located in a restored Edwardian-era building, just 400 meters from Southsea beach. When I saw the photographs, I felt a very cozy and warm atmosphere of a grandmother's house with a garden and rooms in floral patterns. If you love romantic and countryside style, then this is your option.

In a similar theme, nearby are the hotels Florence House Boutique Hotel and Restaurant at 2 Malvern Road, Florence Gardens Boutique Hotel and Restaurant at 4 Malvern Road, and Florence Suite Boutique Hotel and Restaurant at 6 Malvern Road. They have roughly the same cost and services, differing only slightly in room design.

Breakfast

Breakfast is not included for all rooms; it depends on the room type. Every morning, guests choose dishes from the menu. Depending on preferences, you can choose English/Irish, gluten-free, vegan, or vegetarian types of breakfast. Previous guests have reported that it is very hearty, hot, and tasty.

Hotel Rooms

All bedrooms and bathrooms are designed in an individual style and furnished with comfortable furniture. You can choose the one that suits your taste the most. Each room has an LCD TV and a charming vanity table, a large mirror, and a wardrobe. Guests praise the clean, spacious accommodations with beautiful decor, a good shower, a comfortable bed, and friendly staff.

Hotel surroundings

The hotel has a convenient location, which has also been appreciated by previous guests. Nearby is the gastropub and restaurant The Florence Arms — a great place for lunch and dinner. The historic warships "Mary Rose," "Victory," and HMS Warrior are less than a 10-minute drive away, as is the Blue Reef Aquarium. The Gunwharf Quays shopping center and Portsmouth Harbour railway station are also less than a 10-minute drive by car. The hotel is a bit away from the city center. Please note if this is important to you. However, there is free parking on the premises as well as by prior arrangement and nearby. If you are traveling by car — this is very convenient.

This place feels similar to the previous one in atmosphere, but for me, its interior design is something between seaside and country styles. I added it to the selection for variety. The hotel will be a good starting point for exploring Portsmouth, including South Parade Pier, which is an 8-minute walk away.

Breakfast

Every morning at Stattons, a full English breakfast is served in a buffet format. Guests appreciated the pleasant atmosphere of the restaurant, the tasty and fresh food with a wide variety of dishes. Many praised the poached eggs on toast and the excellent coffee. Some noted that there were few fresh fruits on the menu.

Hotel Rooms

All hotel rooms are very stylish, featuring LCD TVs, Egyptian cotton bed linen, and luxurious L'Occitane toiletries. Each room is designed in a unique style with distinctive furniture and accessories. I particularly liked the executive room with a king-size bed, which has beautiful furniture: a dresser, a wardrobe, and a bed. There is also a cozy armchair and a desk. In some rooms, the bathtub is right in the bedroom, while the bathroom only has a shower, sink, and toilet. A very unusual solution.

Impressions about the hotel

Guests appreciated that the hotel is located away from noisy streets, the rooms are clean and well decorated. Many liked the comfortable shower and bed, as well as the polite and responsive staff.
